Is a job in retail sales really that bad for a college graduate?
Asked by sara
I would be making more money than any job in the field in which I got my degree in. And it's a lot easier work. But a lot of people I know look down on people who work in retail sales. What do you think?

If you like retail sales AND you're making money, whats the dilema? People look down on lawyers and they make an S load of money

Retail sales jobs are not great. You spend most of your money buying the clothes the store manager tells you to buy. Sure, you may get a slight discount, but what is the point. Are you his guaranteed customer. I've always though that is one of the biggest scams ever. However, until you find something better, you gotta pay the bills. Keep looking and don't give up, I'm sure something else will turn up.

Why would someone look down at you for an honest job? Do what you have to do to pay the bills as long as you stay respectful to yourself. Sales will give you a lot of experience if you haven't been in the job market to long. It's either that or fast food or telemarketing!

I'm in retail sales. A lot of people assume you don't have a college degree when you're in that field and are suprised to see you've got so much education under your belt. But really, I don't care what they think....do what makes You happy.

any job is worth well doing. arrogance get people nowhere. humility is essential. Keep up your good work. When u are in some high flying position next time after u graduated... i bet you would be a better supervisor to your lower ranking subordinates...

What matters most is what YOU think and what makes YOU comfortable. If you want to work in retail sales and you can make more money than in your field, then go for it if it is what you want to do. However, if you have reservations about it because you feel that it's not what you wanted to do and went to school for, then do some deep thinking about it, and about what you really want. There is nothing worse than feeling trapped in a professional situation that you dislike but have to stay in because "the money is good." If you do what you really like, that is what matters. Figure out what you really want to do and if that is retail sales, GO FOR IT. Do not ever think about what other people consider "appropriate" for college grads or other people. Be your own best advisor when it comes to your own life, and you will never get bad advice. : ) Good luck.

I worked in retail sales for a couple of years after graduating from college while I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. At places where you make a commission (like Nordstrum's) top salespeople can make a very decent living. I did feel that people looked down on me to some extent, but I tried really hard not to let it get me down. I reminded myself constantly that who I was inside wasn't defined by my job title or my salary. I gave 100% every day at my retail job, and was promoted a couple of times and always got excellent reviews. And when a corporate job came along that interested me, I don't think it hurt me, because I took pride in my retail work, and because my managers spoke well of me. For me, the main downside of a retail job was the monotony. I like people, so I enjoyed doing customer service, but it's kind-of the same day in and day out. If you know that you want to go into retail management someday, it would be worth it. Because I didn't want to do that, I felt a little bit like I was on the road to nowhere. Remember that you are not defined by your job, and also that a retail job doesn't have to be forever. Take pride in your work, and don't listen to any naysayers!

If retail is something you ENJOY, it can be a very rewarding career. If you are good at selling, maybe you can negotiate with your employer a commission, or bonuses for sales milestones that will help make it a game for you to sell more. It's not being "pushy" that sells, it's having a knack for convincing people that they are getting what they need through honest, helpful, courteous interaction.

dang, if you are making more money in retail than with any other job in the field that you got your degree in, then, if you dont mind me saying so, SUCKS big time. Why even go to college? I was doing retail sales in high school but college isnt designed to make you money, its designed to teach you a skill that will be obsolete in a couple of years and to work for somebody your whole life. Not to be rich, not to be comfortable, but to be miserable. I dont look down on anyone for their hustle but you asked so, thats my op.
