Volunteer work history on a clerical resume important?

When writing a resume for a city clerical job; is it necessary to include your history of volunteer work? Does it help your chances at all??

Yes it's important if the volunteer work is similar to the job you're applying for. Yes it will help your chances of landing that interview. It shows you have previous experience working in that field. In my resume, I include my volunteer work under work experience. I don't tell them it was an unpaid position unless they ask me during the interview (which they never do)
