How to get a administrative/office assistant job?
Asked by chloƫ
Im taking classes for microsoft programs. but other than that i dont have clerical experience. How do i get jobs like these if I dont have experience? do i need a business degree. i already have my bachelors but it isn't in business. I've noticed a few office assistant positons that aren't asking for more than year in experience. What are these companies looking for in these positions?

I agree with everything that NFL FAN said. I'm also old enough to remember them being called secretaries, lol.
You will get an interview, probably with a smaller sized company. That's a good thing, because you will be asked to do many things, broadening your skills.
The main thing they will be looking for in you is attitude. Try to be as bright and perky as you can be. Remember that you will often be the first face customers see when they walk in the door, or voice they hear when the call...the person interviewing you will be looking at your personality traits.

The fact that you have a degree is great even if its not in business. Also your degree that be used to substitute experience even if you do not have professional experience. Even if you feel that you do not have the experience still apply for the administrative position. You might want to consider trying a temp or staffing agency if you are applying to these places and not getting interviews. Although its better to be working for company, just one temp assignment can get your foot in the door for another administrative/office assistant job or career. You should place emphasis on your Microsoft Office skills especially your typing and excel skills. Word and Excel are probably the two most important software that you need to know how to use. Make sure this is mentioned in your resume or application. Let the employer know you can type at least 55 wpm and you have an strong knowledge of the Microsoft Office programs. Also mention skills such as attention to detail, multitasking, and organizational skills on your resume and if asked in an interview about these skills try to give examples. Sorry my answer is long but I hope it helps.
