Does working as an administrative assistant have to be a dead end job?

I've been working as an administrative assistant for a little over a year now, and I hate it. It's repetitive, boring, degrading, low paying, etc. But I don't see where else I can go with this so called "career". Any advice on jobs I can branch out to with the experience I have?

Not at all, take advantage of your role. Work closely with the person(s) you support or assist and learn all the roles. Serve as a back up and put everything you do on your resume. Next time there is an opening position (even a leadership role) you should defenitly apply within your company. That's how you move up! If you feel that you have been there over a year and no such opportunity has presented itself, then post your resume and use what you've learned to take with you.

you've got a foot in the door, that's what aa jobs do. if you can't move up internally then I suggest a horizantal shift to another company that may have advancement opportunities from within the company?

I suggest you ask your boss or someone you work with for more challenging tasks. If you do not have a college degree obtain one - go to school & work at the same time. If you show some initiative perhaps your company will consider you for future opportunities. I know many people who have started in administrative assistant positions & moved on to other jobs from there.
Please do not get an attitude or insult the work you are given in any way. It is all part of a big picture in some way, shape or form.

After 2 yrs as an administrative assistant, I was promoted to mgr, which amounted to an $8,000/yr increase in salary and more variety and experience than I could hope for. It all depends on the 'corporate culture' in your company, the way they view job descriptions and promotions, and quite frnakly - luck and determination. Good luck.
PS: I miss the boredom of my old job - the current stress as mgr can be quite overwhelming at times! :)
