Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Driver Business Leader (DBL) is Schneider National’s key operations link between the organization, driver and customer. The broad base of industry knowledge and experience gained while in this position prepares the new manager for any number of career paths within the Schneider National organization.

The primary responsibility of this position is to lead and dispatch a group of driver associates and manage all aspects of the driver experience. Driver Business Leaders are expected to utilize effective leadership and dispatch skills to deliver business results in 4 key areas: Safety, Service, Productivity, and Cost Management. Though this position is most closely aligned with our driver associates, successful Driver Business Leaders will have the ability to make decisions balancing the needs of the company, our customers and our drivers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Makes safety-conscious decisions and owns SAFETY performance of the fleet. Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, and D.O.T. regulations.

2. Manages prevention of SERVICE failures through effective dispatch, load monitoring, proactive communication and data accuracy.

3. Maximize tractor PRODUCTIVITY through effective driver dispatch and asset management.

4. Provides on-going coaching and leadership to driver associates to ensure LOW COST performance through the use of the Performance Management Model.

5. Makes sound decisions which balance all sides of the “Value Triangle” (customer, driver, business) which result in a high degree of efficiency and effectiveness.

6. Establishes solid business relationships and maintains open, accurate and timely two-way communications with driver.

7. Accountable to keep drivers informed, focused, and motivated through regular BPs.

8. Accountable for driver performance, including performance improvement plans and execution of termination for cause.

9. Collaborates with others in the organization to identify and implement both local and global creative solutions to improve retention.

10. Coordinates the seamless transfer of drivers to other LOB’s or OC’s as part of a retention solution or driver career development.

11. Manages driver payroll.

12. Ensures drivers have quality time at home.

13. Facilitates driver town hall meetings, business updates, etc.

14. Champions Enterprise/OC specific driver recognition programs

15. Encourages professional driver appearance and behavior.

16. Provides input to, participates in, or leads teams of associates focusing on a variety of projects.

17. Provides mutual support during absence of other team members during peak times to include solicitation and other customer service activity.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or 3-5 years of driver/capacity management/dispatch experience.

2. Demonstrated excellence as an empowering leader in a dynamic, fast-paced, hands-on environment.

3. Ability to evaluate alternatives in order to make best overall value decisions based on considering cost, customer expectations, driver needs and other factors.

4. Solid judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills and a proven record of taking the initiative and responsibility in using those skills effectively, both individually and as a member of a team.

5. Ability to function in a high-stress environment.

6. Demonstrated ability to communicate and listen effectively with people of diverse opinions and backgrounds.

7. Prior Operations experience helpful.
